Is Invisalign® Effective?

May 23 • 1 minute read

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. By the introduction of Invisalign®, patients in need of malocclusion therapy now had an alternative to conventional braces. However, many patients still have questions about the effectiveness of clear aligner systems such as Invisalign.

Below, we will discuss in further detail just how these alternative orthodontic treatments compare to traditional braces.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Metal Braces: The Basics

It is important to understand how these invisible trays differ from conventional orthodontic treatments. Although there are many differences, perhaps the most obvious is their appearance and purpose. Just like its name, Invisalign® clear aligners are a system of clear trays that are removable and are worn over teeth. It is designed to treat mild to moderate forms of malocclusion and misalignment by gently and gradually moving teeth into the proper position over time.

Here are a few key points about Invisalign:

Treatment is faster, generally taking about six to 18 months for completion
Because Invisalign® is easy to maintain, treatment tends to be more convenient
There are no dietary restrictions, as the trays are removable during meals
Like braces, Invisalign® may cause some discomfort due to tooth movement

Is Invisalign® Effective?

When patients qualify for treatment and comply with its requirements, then yes, Invisalign is very effective.

While the trays can be removed for eating and oral hygiene, if patients remove them too often, this will significantly impact the effectiveness of treatment.

Keep in mind, to achieve the desired results, Invisalign clear aligners must be worn at least 22 hours a day. Because of this, it is best for Invisalign to be a recommended treatment plan for responsible teens and adults.

The decision between Invisalign and traditional braces should be thoroughly discussed between you and your dental professional.  If it is determined that you or a loved one have complex orthodontic issues, then conventional braces may be the best course of action.
